Guest Editorial in Bicycle Retailer Mag.

Just a reminder to make sure you read the guest editorial in the August 1 issue of Bicycle Retailer & Industry News Magazine (BRaIN).  The topic is blogging and it was written by yours truly.

It's not the greatest bit of writing I've ever done, but if it gets just a few more folks in this industry to start blogging, I'll be happy.

If you don't get the magazine, here's a link to the article on my web site(Unfortunately BRaIN doesn't release any of the content from their magazine on the web so I can't link to it directly).

That would be Jonathan Maus at Just Riding Along. He actually knows something about bike retail and marketing, unlike people like me who just froth at the mouth as we spout our nonsense. Just about every blog post he makes is something informative, u... [Read More]

Great editorial. Although weblogs seem to be becoming all the rage in the mainstream press, many companies (not just biking related) seem especially slow on the uptake of the technology.

And while it's great to see other companies step up and start using 'blogs as marketing tools, some of them still don't 'get it'. To make a generic example, a weblog that's updated once every two months isn't especially useful -- I've seen examples of this all over the place and I forget those sites as quickly as yesterday's dinner.

As an aside, how exactly do you use the trackbacks on this blog? I tried to use it when linking from my site but got some XML-type content when I clicked on the link.

Cheers,
Cory

Cory:
To Trackback to an entry just click the "Trackback" link below the post. Then you should see:

"TrackBack URL for this entry:
http://www.typepad.com/t/trackback/2895273"

Just enter that URL into the "trackbacks" (or whatever yours is called) section when creating your post.

Hopefully that does the trick. If not, just drop me a line and we'll figure it out.

Cory,

What software do you use to blog? If your software doesn't allow for trackbacks, you can do it manually with Haloscan.

I didn't see a way to leave a comment at your blog to leave a comment so hopefully you'll see the comment here.

Oh, Jonathan -- great article :-) I like the analogy you make between blogging and Interbike.

Nice job on the article. I noticed it yesterday. Most in the industry are behind the curve in regards to blogs. Keep doing what you're doing with your blog. Maybe one day we'll cross paths and share some views about the industry.

John - I really appreciate your editorial and your vision. Texas Bicycle Coalition just launched it's new website, BikeTexas.org, built with Mambo. We're still working on it, but it's live and has had a great response. The goal is to build a member-driven community site utilizing many of your blogging principles. We hope to extend blog privileges to our Member Shops and Events, and offer Individual Members authorship permissions. I was thrilled to read your editorial in BRAIN, as I know that many of our Members read it...hopefully your words will make our plans for BikeTexas more attractive to shop owners in Texas. Keep driving the revolution!

I have been active in the online mtn bike community as 'ska todd' since around 2000 (mainly on the message boards of mtbr, ridemonkey, and hcor) directly answering consumer inquiries, warranty issues, etc, etc. It has now gotten to the point that I monitor the few major sites a handful of times per day and the minor ones once every day or two. While not directly 'blogging', I see this as much more effective in directly communicating w/ consumers than a blog. Personally, I see blogs far more as rants and raves with an air of fakeness and a certain degree of pretentiousness. The message boards are foot soldier style trench warfare and certainly not for the faint of heart or those trying to fake it. You can fake a blog; you can't fake street cred and knowledge on message boards or you'll quickly be called out on it!

Just my .64NT...

When choosing a credit card I always feel like I have a rival I need to outsmart. If I don't I'll be ripped off but if I do I will save a decent amount of money. I would like to hear your opinion right now. I need to get a good cash back credit card. Which offer would you recommend at
